When the company's ownership becomes clear, the firm could also find money for new planes and support for opening new routes from Tallinn, Vilnius and also Riga. An interview was taken with Estonian Air president Andrus Aljas. Responding to the question of what kind of large aviation firm could be Estonian Air's partner after the ownership hand-off, Aljas said that SAS remains the most-logical choice. Aljas said that the idea of a single airline over the Baltic states is not new. It would be worth it economically if the company would have one home airfield. Geographically, Riga is the most suited for this. However such a solution could be harmful for both Lithuanian and Estonian air passengers, he said. The Estonian government seems to be expecting Estonian Air to fly two times a day to all capitals of European Union member states; however Aljas said that above all, demand sets the choice of direct-flight destinations and frequency of flights. He added that this demand definitely must be increased in order for quick realization of such a schedule. The efforts of Estonian Air alone fall short here; making Tallinn Airport costs more competitive would also assist greatly. Long-term and systematic work in development of tourism also causes a growth in demand, making the country popular as a tourist destination.
