A floating island which broke off from the bed was last Friday let through the Narva water reserve canal locks.

Brushwood coming off the island moved quickly downriver on the river to the Narva-Joesuu beach and caused locals alarm. Narva-Joesuu spa hotel public relations manager Jekaterina Gritskova said that the hotel’s operations have not been significantly affected by the beach event: people are angry, however the hotel has an outdoor pool which visitors may use. As of Friday, only two individuals had cancelled reservations for personal reasons. “The majority of our Russian tourists come from Moscow, booking a spot in the hotel for two-to-three weeks. Those who have ordered their trip long ago have also showed up,” said Gritskova.
