United Airlines has finally received approval from the US Department of Justice to buy Continental Airlines and thereby to create the biggest airline in the world.

The approval means, that Delta Air Lines will be the second biggest airline. It is expected, that United Airlines after the buy will represent a global market share of seven percent, while Delta stands for six percent.

In May United Airlines informed the public that they had reached an agreement with Continental of a buyout of all stocks for USD 3.2 billion. The merger was accepted by EU in July. The two American airlines have routes to 35 destinations in Europe.
