47 members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to report second quarter results to date made a combined net profit of US$ 3.9bn.
This is $4.8bn better than Q209’s $881m net loss. Operating profit, meanwhile, improved to $6.9bn from -$518m. Of the 47 reporting airlines, 15 are based in North America, 14 in Asia Pacific, 11 in Europe, four in Latin America and three elsewhere.
The North America carriers swung to a $1.7bn net profit from a $514m loss in Q209, with those in Asia Pacific achieving a $1.2bn profit versus a $322m loss. The European airlines reported a $1bn profit, much improved from Q209’s $548m loss, but the result was boosted by a $1.3bn gain primarily by Air France-KLM on the sale of its stake in Amadeus.
Latin American carriers slipped to a $36m net loss from a $509m profit a year ago.
