Transatlantic flights may be grounded over the next few days as Hurricane Earl batters the east coast of America.

Reports on the BBC said airlines have warned flights from New York and Boston might have to be cancelled if the hurricane continues its path northwards.

It quoted Continental Airlines saying storms were likely to make air travel difficult, which could force it to cancel flights from Newark.
