Airport travel

This year's Regional Airline Conference organised by the European Regions Airline Association (ERA) tackled the challenge of how to satisfy the needs and expectations of today's air traveller.

Delegates were presented with a whole range of new ideas, new equipment, technology and procedures for improving passenger facilitation and introducing more enjoyment to the passenger experience at airports.

"The key word emanating from the conference is 'empowerment'," said ERA director general, Mike Ambrose. "Modern communications technology allows passengers an unprecedented involvement in decision-making regarding all aspects of their journey. They can assess numerous travel options and, in many cases, can undertake in the comfort of their own home, processes which have previously required queuing at airports, phone calls to reservation centres, visits to travel agents, etc.

"Passenger empowerment is a feature of today's air travel that is here to stay. While there is no silver bullet for satisfying all passengers' needs and expectations, airlines and airports must ensure that they react positively to the empowerments that they have created."

"It is vital, however, that Regulators work with us more readily to ensure new regulations do not impose additional burdens on airlines, airports and their customers."
